Emma Lou Scantlin was born September 28, 1923 at Powell, Missouri. She was the second of seven children born to Dewey Cecil and Aubrey Faye (Schell) Scantlin. She grew up primarily in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
In 1937, her family moved to Burrton, KS and she graduated from Haven High School in 1941. After two years she began working for Boeing until the war was over. She then went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, and worked there until she retired.
During this time, she met Marvin Friend on a blind date and they were later married on January 1, 1950.
She has been an active part of the First Christian Church in Haysville, the First Christian Church in Diamond MO, and the Mulvane Christian Church in Mulvane, KS.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin L. Friend, on December 15, 1982. She is survived by sisters Virginia Robidoux of Collinsville, OK, Faye (Bud) Stalcup of Hutchinson, KS, and Shirley Waddle of Enid, OK; two daughters Karen Friend (Jim) of Mulvane, KS, Nancy (Paul) Friend-Sanagorski of Wichita, KS; four grandchildren, Tricia Cunningham of Salina, KS, Tara Cunningham of Lenexa, KS, Austin (Emily) Stephens of Nashville, TN, and Allison (Luke) Harris of Wichita, KS; one great-granddaughter Caroline Stephens.
Visitation will begin 10:00 am Saturday, August 28, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am, both at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road, Derby, KS 67037. Graveside services will be held 11:00 am Monday, August 30, in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cove, Arkansas.
