Dorothy Pauline Strauhs passed away on January 6, 2017 at her home in Douglass, Kansas. She was born June 19, 1927 in Madison, Kansas and died at the age of 89. Dorothy worked hard as a homemaker for most of her life and she also worked for several years as a waitress and then daycare provider.
Throughout her life, Dorothy had many hobbies. She loved to hunt, fish, and camp. She also had a love for gardening and working in her yard. Furthermore, she enjoyed ceramics, painting, and crafting as well as sewing. In her younger years, she and her husband, Ed, loved going dancing. Dorothy also loved spending time with family, taking trips with her sisters, going on shopping excursions with her daughters and granddaughters, playing with her great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and attending numerous of her family’s activities.
Dorothy lived life to the fullest and everyone she met fell in love with her. She was often referred to by her family and friends, “as the life of the party.” Her fun, bubbling personality, her tons of energy, and her laughter were all contagious. This was evident even in her last months when her health was failing.
Dorothy was married to Ed Strauhs on April 24, 1944 in El Dorado, Kansas. They celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary at their home in Douglass with family and friends and their 50th Wedding Anniversary also in Douglass with family and friends. They were even blessed to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary with family shortly before Ed passed away in 2004.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Carol Bell of Douglass and Dorothy Whiteman of Cambridge; sister, Darlene Riggs and husband, Alan, of Hill City; Granddaughters Cassandra Caster and husband, Cliff, of Douglass, Krissy Burkholder and husband, Kevin, of Marion, Karen Bannister and husband, Les, of Burden; Grandson, Marty Whiteman of Cambridge; 10 Great Grandchildren Melissa, Jeremy, Tyler, Morgan, Brody, Jasiah, Lucas, Kolby, Chloe and Calli; 4 Great Great Grandchildren Chance, James, Keagan and Kennedy; and many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Bessie Jones; Sister, Joann Keith; Brothers, Cliff Jones, Stacey Jones, ad Roy Jones; Son-In-Law, Ronnie Whiteman; Grandson, James Whiteman; Granddaughter, Amy Whiteman; and Great Granddaughter, Kayla McMichael.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at the Three Wooden Crosses Cowboy Church, 5118 Southwest 100th Street, Augusta, Kansas, on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Atlanta Cemetery, in Atlanta, Kansas. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, January 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home in Douglass, Kansas.
