Dorothy Irene (Burns) Pray, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, in hospice care at home, after a courageous struggle with cancer. She was born April 4, 1933, in Kingfisher, OK, to Irene (Cook) and Zello “Buz” Burns. She spent more than 30 years as an educator, teaching first-, second-, and third-grade classes in Wichita, Maize, and Mulvane. Besides teaching, her other passions were sewing, quilting, knitting, reading, and doting on her family – especially her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active leader in Mulvane Federated Women’s Club and teaching sorority Delta Kappa Gamma, and enjoyed spending time with her church family. She served as devoted, loving caregiver to her husband of 44 years, Kenny Pray, during his long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Survivors include daughter Anne (Barry) Smith of Wichita; son Mark (Sarah) Burton of Arkansas City; daughter Amy (Tim) Schoon of Iowa City, IA; brothers James (Charlotte) Burns of Lancaster, TX, Jerry “A.J.” (Barbara) Burns of Park City, KS, and Max (Doris) Burns of Fort Smith, AR; grandchildren Brianne Smith Becker, Crystal Davis, Jeremie Hill, Jonathan Burton, Jennifer Burton, Henry Schoon, 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation 1-8 p.m. (family present 4-6 p.m.) Friday, Feb. 10, Smith Family Mortuary, Mulvane. Funeral service 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, at First Presbyterian Church, 324 N. Baltimore, Derby. Interment to follow at Mulvane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market St., Wichita, KS, 67202, or Friends of the Mulvane Public Library, 408 N. 2nd Ave., Mulvane, KS, 67110.
