Delbert F. Case, 84, died Saturday, March 18, 2017 after suffering a heart attack while skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado with his son. A native of Ohio, he was "Dutch" to his brothers, and "Del" to others. He first moved to Kansas when he was stationed in Hutchinson while serving in the U.S. Navy. Skilled as an airplane mechanic, he returned to Ohio to propose marriage to Evelyn Harvey, "on their third date," before he returned to Kansas. Their marriage lasted 62 years. After completing his public service, and college in Indiana, he commenced working as an engineer in Maryland. He returned to the Midwest with Boeing - Wichita commencing employment in 1965. The young married couple moved to Derby and intended to stay. Del and Evelyn were active members of the Pleasantview Baptist Church in Derby for 50 years. Del sang in the choir and served in other capacities too. After he retired in 1995, Evelyn and Del traveled around the globe throughout North and South America, Western Europe, Asia and Australia. After Evelyn's passing, family and his morning coffee routine with friends and the extended family at church sustained him. Del is survived by a daughter, DeElla VanFleet (Craig VanFleet) a son, Kevin Case (John Travers) of Kansas City; two grandchildren Amy Salisbury (John Salisbury) and Ryan VanFleet (Lindsey VanFleet) also of Kansas City; and five great grandchildren; two older brothers Gerald and Dwight, a younger sister Ruby Steiner, and many nieces and nephews he spoke of often. Visitation: Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 3 to 8 pm with family present between 3 and 5 pm at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby, KS 67037. Memorial Service: 10 am, Friday, March 24, 2017 at Pleasantview Baptist Church, 1335 N. Buckner St., Derby, KS 67037.
