Constance “Connie” (Leis) Sommerhauser, age 89, farmwife and homemaker, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013. Visitation 1-5 PM Friday, Smith Mortuary,1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby. Rosary 7 PM Friday, Funeral Mass 10 AM Saturday, both at St. Michael Catholic Church, 545 E. Main, Mulvane. She was born November 29, 1924, on the family farm at Clonmel, KS to Joseph & Caroline Leis, the youngest of 8 children. Connie was preceded in death by her parents and was the last survivor of 3 brothers and 4 sisters. She was united in marriage on August 20, 1946 to Earl J. Sommerhauser. They enjoyed 67 years together, with their family and Catholic faith adding joy and purpose to their lives. That faith, which she worked so hard to inspire, contributed to her belief in the power of prayer, the strength of family, and the importance of a well-timed good word. Connie will be remembered as a warm and caring person with a welcoming smile. She enjoyed hard work, music, sewing, quilting, a good game of Pitch, growing flowers and vegetables, and sharing starts of her flowers with friends and neighbors. She is survived by her husband, Earl; children, Darrell (Mary K.), of Raytown, MO, Bob (Sylvia), of Rose Hill, Tim (Jane), of Mulvane, Elaine (Tom) Coulson, of Larned; Marya (Larry) Taylor, of Haysville, Kathy (Kevin) Barker, of Rose Hill, and Karen (Jerry) Langer, of Wichita; 16 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
