Charlie Smith

June 4, 1951 — March 4, 2021

Charles (Charlie) Stephen Smith, 69, adored husband, father and grandfather, died Thursday March 4, 2021 at home surrounded by family.


We are celebrating Charlie’s life 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary. Pastor Steve Grieve is officiating. An open microphone will be offered for guests to share impromptu tributes. Cremation has taken place.


Charlie was born in Winfield, Kansas to Austin and Louise Smith on June 4, 1951. He went to Burlington Elementary in Douglass, Kansas until the 8th grade and graduated from Mulvane High School in 1969. He married Debra Sue Vap on December 13, 1991 in Miami, Oklahoma. He was a retired aircraft and State of Kansas employee and a veteran of the Kansas Army National Guard, serving during the Vietnam era.


His hobbies and interests included coyote hunting, firearms enthusiast, proud member of NRA, talking on the phone with friends and family, unofficial self-appointed neighborhood watchman, flying with Wade Alexander in Citation Jets, westerns, his long list of pet dogs, true crime, pick-up trucks, redneck conservative and visits from his treasured family, especially his grandchildren. He received an NRA Legion of Honor Award, NRA Life Member Certificate and Citation of Merit from Cessna Aircraft Company.


Charlie is preceded in death by Austin Smith (father), Louise Smith (mother) and Dick Smith (brother).


Charlie is survived by his wife Debra, cherished pet, Bullet, children: Rachel Vogt, her husband Troy, Mike Vap, his wife Jeanie and Stephanie Kullman, her husband Michael, grandchildren: Lynda Rogers her husband Mike, William Kellogg, Brandon Vap, Andrew Vap, Sebastian Kullman and Adrian Kullman, great-grandchildren: Rylee Rogers, Raegan Rogers and Braelynn Yocum.
