Conway, Leon

85, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021 in Derby, Kansas. He was born January 16, 1936 to Carlos and Berniece Conway in Enid, Oklahoma.

Leon was a Science and Art teacher at Scott Community High School in Scott City, Kansas, where he also coached football, basketball and track. Leon also served as the Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, Principal and Superintendent of Schools. After leaving the education field, Leon entered the private business industry, eventually specializing in environmental consulting services.

Leon was a loving and devoted husband, dad and granddad. He cared deeply for his family and friends and cherished the relationships he cultivated throughout his career and life. Leon loved the outdoors; spending time hunting, fishing and being with his family. He also enjoyed art, loved to draw and was an avid sports fan. Leon shared his birth date with his daughter, Jana and granddaughter, Regan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; aunt Ruby Simon; brother-in-law Herbie Bailey; sister-in-law Glenda Reynolds; brother-in-law David Reynolds; and other family members.

Leon is survived by his wife of 67 years, JoAnne of Derby, Kansas; children, LeAnne (Jerry) Thomas of Manhattan, Kansas, Mark (Julie) Conway of Mulvane, Kansas, Jana (Shannon) Brownlee of Rose Hill, Kansas; grandchildren, Jarrett (Kelsey) Thomas of St. George, Kansas, Mandi (Kolby) Menard of Prairie Village, Kansas, Tyler (Kirsten) Conway of Rose Hill, Kansas, Paige (Derrick) Creech of Rose Hill, Kansas, Staci Thomas of Manhattan, Kansas, Regan Brownlee of Rose Hill, Kansas, Reed Brownlee of Rose Hill, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Mark Conway II of Rose Hill, Kansas, Peyton Menard of Prairie Village, Kansas, Maci Conway of Rose Hill, Kansas, Brielle Thomas of St. George, Kansas, Riley Menard of Prairie Village, Kansas, Kasen Thomas of St. George, Kansas; sisters Barbara Bailey of Pond Creek, Oklahoma, Beverly Page of Woodlawn Park, Colorado, Pat (Bud) Wilkens of Edmond, Oklahoma; brother-in-law Bob Reed of Enid, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Tuesday, November 9, 2021, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Smith Family Mortuary 1415 North Rock Road Derby, Kansas 67037. Funeral Service: 10:00 am, Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at Smith Family Mortuary Chapel 1415 N. Rock Rd. Derby, Kansas 67037. Interment to follow at Pond Creek Cemetery in Pond Creek, Oklahoma.
