Artie Dillon, The Gentle Giant, dies at 76. Artie passed away on August 19, 2013, after a long battle with cancer. Brother of Virgil Dillon, husband of Conne Dillon, father of Tyler Dillon, grandfather of Ariel and Emma Dillon. One of his best friends was his brother-in-law, John Spies, and his family Sherre, Rhonda and Stacey. We want recognize the efforts of Artie's sister-in-law, Linda Dillon. Her medical background served to make her Artie's most vigilant guardian in dealing with today's convoluted health care systems. Artie signed with the New York Giants right out of high school, but knew playing behind Willie Mays meant a long, long wait. He returned to Kansas and became a Firefighter with the Wichita Fire Department. Following graduation from Wichita State, he taught and coached in USD 259 for many years. He also operated one of Wichita's first privately-owned fitness centers. A Memorial Recognition for Artie is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1st. It will be held at the Sunflower Pavilion at Sedgwick County Park from 7 to 9 at night. It will be very informal and please rsvp at adillon1@cox.net. All of us would enjoy your stories about Coach. Please, no flowers. If you wish to make a memorial donation, please consider The Wichita Children's Home at 810 N Holoyoke, 67214 or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at 313 S Market 67202.
