Derby, Tonry, Albert Joseph II 81, died Friday June 7, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. He was born May 2, 1943 in Corpus Christi, Texas,
He began his military at birth as his father was a Navy officer. Al finished high school at Valley Forge Military Academy. From there he joined the U. S. Air Force on February 14, 1962 and served 4 years during the Vietnam war.
He married Cynthia Morgan June 13, 1970. In 1971, Al and Cynthia moved to Massachusetts. It was there, that Al went through the Army Officer Candidate school and joined the Massachusetts National Guard. In 1985 we moved back to Kansas and he retired from the Military not long after with the rank of Major.
Al had a wide variety of interests. He loved any kind of military history including being a member of an elite organization called The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He was an avid traveler, most notably taking worldwide annual trips with the Ancients. He enjoyed telling jokes and shared them with lots of people. He was also a coin and stamp collector from a young age. Al went everywhere with a book in hand because reading was the hobby he practiced most. In the last few years photography and bridge had piqued his interest.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert and stepmother Alice, his mother Ruth and stepfather Robert Sparks. Al had also lost his younger brother George, brother in law Lonny Spilberger, and sister in law Lianne Tonry.
He is survived by his wife Cynthia, son Aaron and wife Anna, Joshua and wife Milli, and daughter Geralyn. He is also survived by his sister Claudia of Louisiana, brother John and wife Roberta of Hawaii, sister Abby of New Hampshire, brother Louie of Texas and sister in law Kate of Massachusetts. There are also lots of nieces and nephews who are saddened by his loss.
Through the years he donated to lots of charities and his final act of kindness was as an organ donor.
His ash were buried at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas with full military honors.
Services will be held Saturday Oct. 5, 2022 at Smith Family Mortuary 1415 N Rock Road Derby, KS 67037.
