Obituary for Wynne "Joe" Cannon

Wynne Joseph “Joe” Cannon, of Wichita Kansas, passed away Tuesday April 18th, 2023, at the age of 75. He gained his wings while surrounded by his loving family.

Joe was a veteran of the US Navy, his expertise being in aviation electronics & avionics. He enlisted in 1965 at RTC San Diego, CA for Recruit Basic Training followed by AT “A” school at NATTC Memphis. His first tour of duty was with VT-24 at NAS Beeville TX. His ensuing tours included VA-44, NAS Jacksonville FL; VC-1 Barbers Point and VC-1 Det. Barking Sands, both located in Hawaii; NAS Kingsville, TX; VC-3, NAS North Island, CA; VAQ -129, VAQ-135 Black Ravens EA6B Prowler Squadron and NAS Whidbey’s NAM TraGru DET 1001. He worked on 21 different aircraft, including five types of unmanned drones. He was aboard the Navy Aircraft Carriers America CV-66 and Nimitz CVN-68 at cruise. He retired from his military career as a chief petty officer in 1986 in Oak Harbor, WA. It was while he was stationed at NAS Beeville Texas that he met the love of his life and anchor, JoAnn Hall. They married on May 22nd, 1968, less than 3 months after they met. They were blessed with 3 children, Michael Wayne, Tracy Lynn & Kimberly Ann.

After his Navy career he worked for Boeing in Wichita as a maintenance instructor on the 757 & 767 avionics and electrical systems. This position would take him all over the world once again just as he did in the Navy. His travels included China, Russia, Africa, Spain, and Colombia to name a few of the countries that he taught maintenance technicians. While at Boeing he had the privilege to work on the two 747’s designated as “Air Force One”, the aircraft that are currently used today.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Cannon, daughter Tracy Lynn, brothers Bill, Mike, Pat, and Jim Cannon. Sister Penny Cannon, sister-in-law Debbie Ellington and niece Dolores “Dee Dee” Ellington. Survivors include wife, JoAnn Cannon of 54 years; son, Michael (Lynn Kraft) Cannon; daughter, Kim (Justin) Prideaux; 4 grandchildren, Sean Stockwell, Morgan & Kenzie Prideaux and Aurora Cannon; sister, Colleen (Gary) Nelson; sisters-in-law, Doris Husband, Darlene (Mike) McGinity, Magdoline (Richard) Graham, Kathy (Robert) Etzel, Christy Jackson; brothers-in-law, Donald Hall, Glenn Hall, Roger Hall, Kenneth (Debbie) Hall; and countless nieces and nephews.

Joe loved to tell stories with a good whiskey and water while having a cigarette. He had an ornery streak in him and had a very big personality. He always had time to spare to tinker on anything and everything whether that be the lawn mower or his ‘55 Hudson Metropolitan Convertible. He loved to cook, he liked to go camping, shoot guns and often collected them. But most of all he enjoyed his family, especially his wife and grandchildren.
