Obituary for Virginia "Ginger" Atkison

Derby - Atkison, Virginia “Ginger” Battis
87, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023. She was born May 8, 1936 to Walter Kyle Whitley and Nancy Lou Allene Cupples in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Ginger grew up in Muskogee Oklahoma where she met and married her Junior High School sweetheart. They travelled to Texas, bringing 2 daughters into the world, before venturing to Tennessee and then settling in Kansas. Family was the most important thing to her. When she was not attending/participating in the kids’ various activities, she engaged in her own hobbies. She was in a bowling league, enjoyed sewing, active in her gardens (loved being outside), delighted in camping, took classes at WSU, hosted Bridge games, an excellent cook, could speak French, avid reader, played various word puzzles, attended plays/symphonies, fond of travelling, and volunteered at husband’s place of employment until he became the Director. She then spent 25 years with, and retired from, Wichita Clinic (now known as Via Christi Clinic) where she filed Dental Insurance.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby “Bob” Lee Atkison; father, Walter Kyle Whitley; mother, Nancy Lou Allene Cupples; and granddaughter, Kelsey Gin Atkison.

Ginger is survived by her daughters, Ginny (Matthew) Atkison-Hall and Teri (James) Sommer; grandchildren, Caitlin (Jacob) Ott, Emma Jane (Clayton) Reid, Jamon Sommer, and Lenzie Sommer; great-grandchild, Rory Ott; brother, Samuel Kyle Whitley; and three nieces.

A private graveside service will be held.
