Obituary for Todd Lee Humbolt

Todd Lee Humbolt passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 21 following a recent cardiac procedure. Todd, son of Michael D. and Joyce A. Humbolt, was born on August 27, 1965, in Wellington, Kansas. As a child, he brought endless joy to his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

He graduated from Mulvane High School in 1983 and later received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Southwestern University. He was recently recognized for 30 years of service at Spirit AeroSystems where he worked as a Core NC programmer. He also served as a board member for Rural Water District No. 3.
Todd and former spouse, Sue Nicholson Sands had two sons, Michael and Christian, who have grown into wonderful young men and have made them proud.
Todd was a caring and dedicated friend to many young and old. He loved all animals – even surprise visits from the slithering kind on occasion. He is deeply missed by his furry family of cats and energetic Milo, his black lab who is waiting on Todd to throw the ball just one more time.

He took pride in living on the Humbolt family farm in the footsteps of his beloved grandparents, Paul and Eunice Humbolt. Embedded with the strength and work ethic of his treasured grandparents, Otto and Gertrude Simon, Todd was in the process of landscaping improvements and restoring many of the farm’s buildings. Many of his creative touches are evident in those projects – a definite nod to his incredibly creative parents.

Todd’s latest creative pursuit involves six strings on each of his impressive guitars he had collected. We suspect the death of the great Eddie Van Halen fueled this passion even more. While his family would have loved to hear Todd play, he was a private person who held his cards close to his chest.
He had a thirst for knowledge and loved to read – especially the great works by J.R.R. Tolkien.

As a Mason and member of Mulvane 201 A.F. and A.M. Masonic Lodge, Todd took time to help others. His many local Simon cousins can attest that they could always count on Todd to show up and have their backs.

Todd was preceded in death by his father, Michael Humbolt; grandparents, Otto and Gertrude Simon and Paul and Eunice Humbolt; uncles Dennis and Kenneth Simon; cousins Jason Campbell and Matthew Simon.

Todd is survived by sons Michael Humbolt, Seattle WA and Christian Humbolt, Kansas City MO; mother Joyce (Simon) Humbolt, Mulvane KS; sister Julee Travis (Matt), Ozawkie KS; aunts Judy Simon and Judy Steinle, both of Mulvane KS; uncle and aunt Mike and Marsha Campbell, Mulvane KS; nieces and nephews, Samantha Travis, Nick Travis; Richard and Brandon Nicholson; Rachel, Kyla and Travis Echelberry; Sara Oppenheimer; and many cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, Todd would have preferred donations be made to local charity Beauties & Beasts or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
