Obituary for Stephen Griffiths

Stephen (Steve) Dale Griffiths was born on November 11, 1940 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Robert William and Sadie Nadine Griffiths. He grew up in Chanute, Kansas. Steve graduated from Chanute High School, Metropolitan Community College in KC, Mo. and Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Steve was an Air Force veteran, serving in Korea, at McConnell Air Base, Wichita, Ks. and Offut Air Base, Omaha, Nebraska.

Steve married Ruby Jackson in Chanute, Kansas on August 14, 1965. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska. When discharged from the Air Force, they moved to the Kansas City area where Steve worked as a photographer for Metropolitan Community College and Johnson County Community College. In 1975 the family moved to Wichita, and a year later to Derby, Kansas. He was employed at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center retiring in 2000 as Chief of Medical Media. He established Steve Griffiths Photography and photographed many school events, weddings, and sports teams in the Derby and Wichita area until 2006 when his health no longer allowed him to continue. Steve loved technology, traveling, cards and golf. He was a longtime member of Woodlawn Methodist Church in Derby. Steve will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his quick wit and as a strong, humble man whose priority was family and service to his church and community.

Steve passed away on April 26, 2021 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Susan Griffiths.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Derby, Kansas. Visitation will be Friday, April 30, 2021 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N Rock Rd, Derby.



He is survived by wife of 55 years, Ruby, daughter, Jana (Jerome) Kostantewicz of Frisco, Texas, son, Jeffrey (Janelle) Griffiths of Frisco, Texas, grandchildren Courtney (Matt) Carlin, Ryan Burchfield, Braden and Landon Griffiths, and step grandsons, Chris and Zack Kostantewicz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Woodlawn United Methodist church, 431 S. Woodlawn , Derby, Kansas and The American Heart Association, 1861 N. Rock Rd #380, Wichita, Kansas 67206.
