Obituary for Shannon Thompson

Shannon Christine Thompson passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at the age of 51. She was born on July 13, 1971 to Mark and Wendy Thompson in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Shannon’s greatest joy was her family. She was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and nana and will be missed dearly. Shannon is survived by her children Shilo and Christopher Eaves, Brett Nelson, Dara Underwood, and Stockton Underwood; her dad Mark Thompson; her siblings Tara and Marcus Wayland, Melissa Bagley, Brandy and Tyson Buffington, Kerry Thompson, and Annie and Sam Vigil; and the absolute light of her life, granddaughter Evelyn Eaves. Her passing is also mourned by countless nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her mother Wendy Thompson.

Shannon was the oldest of six daughters and growing up her home was filled with everything you could imagine a large family of girls would consist of - screaming, hair-pulling, tears, and estrogen-fueled rampages. More importantly, though, it was full of love, laughter, kindness, hugs, respect, and faith. Shannon grew up a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and her deep and abiding beliefs sustained her throughout her life. Family and faith brought her joy and peace, especially during her cancer battle. Shannon found hope and comfort in studying the gospel. She was a great example of Christ-like love to all she encountered.

Shannon loved to bake. One could always find her in the kitchen surrounded by an impressive array of baked-goods, especially cookies. Her chocolate chip recipe is second to none - ask anyone who had the pleasure of partaking. Spending time in the kitchen with her children gave her a unique bonding opportunity that they cherish. She also loved to travel and had the opportunity to live in and visit many different places in the United States and abroad. Wherever she was, people were drawn to her kindness and her compassion. Through her life, Shannon cultivated friendships all over the world and held each one of them dear to her heart.

Even as Shannon’s body failed, her smile never did. She brought humor to her most challenging times and left a trail of Shannonigans behind. Whether it was dressing up for her treatments, insisting on having her eyebrows done at all times, or her constant need for sparkles, memories of Shannon will make sure the smiles she shared will continue on the faces of those who loved her.

We will celebrate Shannon’s beautiful life on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 3pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meetinghouse in Derby, Kansas (1409 South Rock Road, Derby, Kansas 67037). Shannon was a plant enthusiast. In lieu of flowers, please send or bring plants that can be taken home and enjoyed by her loved ones for years to come.
