Obituary for Ruth Harris

Ruth Harris graduated Tuesday morning April 28, 2020 in Derby, KS from her 94 year-old fleshly body to her eternal body in Jesus Christ. The old hymn, “This World Is Not My Home” was a favorite, often sung by Ruth while playing her guitar. Listeners always requested her two signature songs, “The Great Speckled Bird” and “Wabash Cannonball!”

The daughter of William and Floy Hollingsworth, she was raised in the rural area near Akron, KS. Ruth always loved working outdoors, riding her horse Buck, and running traps before school to earn extra money.

On May 1, 1943 she married her sweetheart, Ernest Harris and they were blessed with four children and 69 years together in marriage. During this time, they labored together on the family farm. Ruth always had a plentiful vegetable garden and many flowers. When she wasn’t making projects in her wood shop you could find her fishing in their big pond. Also, well known for her delicious bread, Ruth was often asked to demonstrate to 4-H and school classes.

Always willing to help, she was active in her church, as well as enjoying being a member of Udall TOPS Club.

After Ernest died, Ruth moved from the farm to Derby Assisted Living where she enjoyed the past seven years.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn (Joe) Ramsey, Dianne (Jim) Reuther and Sandra Groene, along with 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; son, Martin Harris; parents; and all of her siblings.
