Obituary for Richard A. Hopper

Richard “Dick” Hopper, a long-time resident of Derby, Ks., passed away January 21, 2024, at the age of 92. Dick was an Air Force veteran who served in the Korean War. He worked as an electrical engineer at Boeing for 35 years. Dick was active in Derby politics and served on the Park Board. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was president of the Serra Club for the Diocese of Wichita. Softball and baseball were two of his greatest passions. He coached both and played softball for years.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, son, Richard (Victoria) Hopper, Kathy (Brad) Carey, Brenda (Pat) Squires, grandchildren Jessica Vail, Keli (J.D.) Shaffer, Kaitlyn (Trent) Arion, Laura (Zac) Shinkle, Julie (Parker) Mitchell, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Floy Hopper, and his sister, Shirley Trainum.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Derby, Tuesday, January 30th with the rosary at 9:30 and the funeral mass at 10:30. Interment immediately following at El Paso Cemetery.
