Obituary for Paul Shetlar

Wichita - Shetlar, Paul David
88, passed away Thursday, September 21st, 2023. He was born January 8th, 1935 to Harry Shetlar and Lillian Booth Shetlar in Conway Springs, Kansas.

Paul attended Belle Plaine High School where he met the love of his life, Shirley. After graduating, he worked briefly for Boeing and then went on to work for the U.S. Post Office. He retired as a supervisor for the General Mail Facility after 30 years of service at age 55.

He began a new chapter in his life of volunteering which was his "new career". He spent 30 years with Meals on Wheels until he was 85. He arrived early before his shift to help pack the meals and then drove three routes daily. He was a treasure to Meals on Wheels for all of his volunteer work over the years.

While giving his time with Meals on Wheels, he was also giving blood and platelets to the American Red Cross. In 2021 he was honored with the "Hero of Life" award from the American Red Cross for donating 1109 units of platelets in all of his 30 years of giving. Fun fact, it takes two hours to give one unit of platelets.

Between working and volunteering, dad loved to travel and take our family on trips. Some years our trips included our church family from South Riverside Baptist Church. To this day, we still have special memories from our time in church.

Paul was not only a treasure to Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross, he was also a treasure to his family. He was very dear to everyone in his family, and to the many people whom he touched in his 88 years. We are so proud of him, and he will leave a big hole in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by brothers; Harry Shetlar, Jr., Richard Shetlar and by step-brothers, Luther Shetlar, Earl Veninga, Edward Veninga; and by step-sister, Fern Grabill.

Paul is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley Shetlar; children, Brenda Shetlar Farmer; Paula Templin (Bob), Mike Shetlar (Melisa); grandchildren, Jennifer Sommerer (Ken), Melissa Garrett (Ian), Rebecca Standifer (Dave), Ben Templin, Bethany Hill (Matt Looper), Christi Kull (Nicholas), Gabrielle Shetlar, Caleb Shetlar; great-grandchildren, Alex, Tyler, Josef, Sophia, Hannah, Jacob, Bridget, Addison, Ariauna, Leia, Isaiah, Lily, Adaline; and one more on the way.
