Obituary for Mary Lee Mills

Mary Lee Mills, 83, cherished mother and dear friend, died Friday, February 26, 2022. Preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Leona Tierney; son, Michael Mills. Survived by her sons, Robert Mills, David (Yvonne) Mills, Alan Mills, and John (Kristy) Mills; daughter Lee Ann (Chris) Mills; numerous extended family and friends; and her loyal dog Alex.

Mary Lee was born on June 29, 1938, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where she later met and married Fred. Together they moved around the U.S., had many adventures, and created and raised six children. Although the marriage ended, they both deeply respected and cared for each other and remained friends until Fred’s death in 2002. She was fiercely devoted to her family and an extraordinary caregiver throughout her life.

Mary Lee was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic parish for over 30 years. She graduated from Kansas Newman University in 1995. She had many jobs which allowed her to experience unique opportunities and to meet so many people who quickly became life-long friends. Her real joy came after retirement when she was able to volunteer. She always wanted to help people. A few of the organizations that she worked with in recent years include Derby Citizens Police Academy (CPA), Sedgwick County Emergency Response Team (CERT), Sedgwick County Animal Rescue Team (SCART), and The Salvation Army. She also knitted prayer shawls for friends and strangers who were sick and needed to be wrapped in love and support.

Mary Lee was full of love, compassion, generosity, and humor. Her absence will be deeply felt by many. She will forever live in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to an animal rescue or shelter in her memory.
