Obituary for Lola Darlene Wilks

Lola Darlene Wilks, age 84, joined her God peacefully on July 19, 2020. She was surrounded by her family. She was born on February 13, 1936 in Dodge City, Kansas to John Henry and Bertha Niedens.

Soon after her family moved to Hoisington, KS, Lola married and eventually became the proud parent of three children. Unfortunate twists and turns on the highway of life eventually led to divorce leaving her the challenge of raising her kids as a single mother. However, faced with limited resources, she was able to conquer that challenge. Although she was working several jobs to make ends meet, Lola still attended and enjoyed nearly every piano recital, track meet or band concert that her family participated in and still found time to enjoy an occasional afternoon fishing trip at the local farm ponds.

After watching her kids leave home, she ultimately encountered the loving relationship that she had long hoped for when she met Edwin Wilks. They married in February 1992 and remained partners, through sickness and in health, until the time of her death.

Lola loved the company of people which no doubt allowed her to be successful for many years in the grocery and customer service sector. She had a good sense of humor and quick wit about her. She loved to tell stories to anyone who would listen. She and Ed also enjoyed a special date night playing the slot machines at their favorite Casinos. Normally though, she only told about the “Lucky” nights.

Lola was an avid Christian and lifelong Lutheran parishioner while in Hoisington, Great Bend, and Wichita. She loved the Lord and put her trust in him.

Lola is survived by her beloved husband Ed, children; Pam Clinger, Kevin (Deanna) Karst, Brian Karst, Kristal (Brad) Stevens, Kathy Hardison, Doug (Lori) Wilks, 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Otto Niedens (Hoisington), Marvin Niedens (Loveland CO), Albert Niedens (Great Bend), Leona Karst (Hoinsington), and Viola Dumler (Russell).

The family will hold a public viewing at Smith Mortuary, 1415 Rock Rd., Derby, KS on Thursday, July 23 from 1 to 8 PM. The immediate family will not be present.

A graveside funeral service will be held at Friends Cemetery, 13265 SW 180th St, Rose Hill, KS on Friday, July 24 at 10:00 AM.

Following the service, there will be a gathering for family & friends at the Wilks residence, 15111 E 63rd St. South, Derby.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Lola’s memory to Reformation Lutheran Church, 7601 E 13th St. North, Wichita, KS 67206 or Good Shepherd Hospice 7829 E Rockhill St, Wichita, KS 67206.
