Obituary

Obituary for Lillian Urquhart

Lillian A. Urquhart-Childers went to be with the Lord on 01/26/2020. Visitation will be 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Monday, February 3, 2020 at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca, Wichita. Graveside Service will be 1:00 pm at Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony.

She lived at the KMH (Kansas Masonic Home). She was born December 28, 1926 to Vern and Agnes Allen in Manchester Oklahoma, Alfalfa County. Lillian was the oldest in the family and grew up with one sister and two brothers. She attended a small country school in Manchester and moved to Anthony, Kansas for her senior year so she could take typing and shorthand which was not offered in Manchester. After graduation Lillian worked at a bank for two years in Anthony and then moved to Wichita. She worked at First National Bank for 44 years before retiring from Investments.

Lillian met her first husband, Marlin Ray Childers at a filling station. “Marlin filled my tank up to the right amount, so my dad didn’t know that I had taken his car. He then asked me to the dance and I gladly accepted and that’s all it took for us to fall in love.”

They later married and had two sons. One son lives in Valley Center and the other lives in Clearwater on a farm. One of Lillian’s favorite memories with Marlin was spending time outside and at the lake. She bought their motorhome and he bought the boat, which they spent just about every weekend in. Lillian was a big fan of water skiing, especially slalom skiing (one ski) and her favorite spot was Beaver Lake in Arkansas.

After Marlin passed in 1989, Lillian got in touch with an old friend named Ray Urquhart the brother-in-law of her former husband Marlin. Marlin’s sister Colleen Ray’s wife passed away a year before Marlin did. Back in the day the two couples would dance the night away at the Moose Club or Cotillion. They went on vacations from California to Washington D.C.

Ray Urquhart and Lillian had a great connection and she actually proposed to him. Lillian proposed to Ray on Leap day one year, but he wouldn’t answer. Ray surprised Lillian by coming into the bank on her last day before retirement and slipping a ring on her finger. Lillian was so surprised and thrilled and couldn’t stop herself from crying that day. They were married on February 20, 1993 and enjoyed many years of traveling and dancing.

Lillian and Ray moved into KMH Kansas Masonic Home in 2003. Lillian’s hobbies include the pool and walking. When we asked Lillian what she liked best about KMH she replied. “I like it all! There are a lot of people here and if you get to know them, they’re really great! Plus, you don’t have to cook!”

Lillian is survived by 2 sons: Ron and wife Karla and Rick Childers; three grandchildren: Kourtney, Austin, and Ashlynne Childers; and two great grandchildren, Kyla and Kinsley.

Memorials have been established with Susan G. Komen For The Cure or the Kansas Masonic Home.

Rest in peace mom!
