Obituary for Faye Howell

Leta Faye (Utt) Howell was born in rural Sedan, Kansas on December 14, 1929, the youngest of four children of Creed and Anna Mae (Allen) Utt. She went home to be with her Lord on January 29, 2023. At the age of 16 months the family moved to a farm near Hewins, Kansas. She attended the first three grades of school at Pleasant View Rural School. She attended Hewins Grade School from the 4th through 8th grades and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in May of 1947.

On December 22nd, 1947 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Marshall in Cedar Vale, Kansas. To this union were born two Daughters, Joyce Ann and Connie Sue.

She lived most of her life in Central Kansas. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona for health reasons when the girls were very young. She worked for the City of Phoenix in various departments, working most of the time in Police Chief’s Office. The family moved back to Kansas in 1965 because of their parent’s ill health. They purchased a grocery store and self-service laundry in Udall, Kansas. After selling the store, she worked for School District 463 in Udall as Secretary to the Principal of the Grade School for 3 years.

In 1973 she began working at Wichita State University. She retired in 1995, after twenty-two years of service with the University.

She was united in marriage to Earl R. Howell on April 14, 1979. Pastor Joe Morgan of South City Southern Baptist Church officiated the ceremony.

She received a great deal of satisfaction working with people, especially with young people at her church and in public education. When her Daughters were teenagers their home was a welcome place for young people. Her Daughters, along with 5 other young people from their church, formed a musical group called Trinity Youth. They traveled around Kansas and Oklahoma holding weekend youth revivals. The group was a special joy to her and she tried to accompany them to these events as much as possible. If they weren’t traveling or practicing, they were usually at their house playing games and eating snacks.

She made many young friends with American and International students in her 22 years at Wichita State University. She was a Mom away from Mom for some International students who would come into her office and talk about their families and their country. That would help them when they were homesick for their family.

The greatest joys of her life were being a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great-Great grandmother. After she retired and had the time she cherished the time she could spend with her Great Grandchildren. She believed what she could do with and for them was an investment in their lives and hers.

She believed in God all throughout her life, having been taken to a small Methodist Church in Hewins, Kansas from her earliest remembrance. Her Mother passed away when she was 14 years old, but the faith in God that her Mother had instilled in her had a lasting influence on her for the rest of her life. It was a very important part of her life. She received Jesus Christ as her Savior in December of 1950. She received many blessings in serving her Lord and teaching Sunday school for the bigger part of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Haysville, Kansas at the time of her death.

She was a people person who greatly enjoyed interacting with people of all ages. She was always looking to see if there was a need she could help with or to just pray with them. This resulted with many friendships the rest of her life.

She was preceded in death by her Husband Earl (Dutch) Howell, parents Creed and Anna Mae Utt, Brothers Carmen and Grant Utt, Sister Selma Bennett, Brother in Law Leo Bennett, Sister in Law Beaulah Utt, Niece Ula Walker, Nephew Steve Bennett, Nephew Bob Marshall and first Husband Ken Marshall.

She leaves to mourn her passing Daughters Joyce (Don) Grams, Connie (Kenny) Pettit, and Grandchildren Misti (Jeremy) Johnson, Amy Bruner, Chad (Tierney) Hopkins, Jessica (Wes) Hoffman. Great Grandchildren, Jordan (Leann) Miller, Jacob and Mariah (Colton) Ocker, Layke (Becca) Hoffman, Chloe and Addison Hoffman, Treyten and Paycie Hopkins, Andrew, Noah and Levi Bruner, Allannah Fogelman, and Great-Great Grandsons Kayde and Kohen Hoffman, Gianni Hopkins and Creighton and Kameron Ocker, Niece Ola Utt, Nephew Ron (Beverly) Bennett and several Great Nieces and Nephews.

The one great desire of her life was that she would leave a legacy of faith for all the family that followed after her and that she would be found faithful most of all to God and them. She greatly desired that they all would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and meet her in heaven on that great and glorious day.
