Obituary for Karen Flynn

On August 18, 2023, Karen E. Flynn, 76, of Derby, KS passed away with her family at her side. Karen met and married her husband Robert in 1970 in Clovis, NM and then resided in numerous places over the years, including England, Virginia, Arizona, California and more. They then moved to Derby in 1983 and have called it home for nearly forty years.

Over the years Karen worked at a bank and as a dental assistant, but Karen’s greatest job was as a homemaker, a military wife, a loving daughter, and a passionate mother of three. As the latter three, her strength and stamina were often tested, and she did an amazing job. She was a very talented artist and her beautiful painted artworks will be admired for years to come.

Karen’s greatest joy in life was spending time with family and friends. She loved it when the whole family was together, usually at her arrangement. It was so important to her that time always be made for each other no matter how busy everyone was and she made sure that was known.

When Karen was diagnosed with ovarian cancer over six years ago she looked at the doctor and told him she would put him in the record books. She put up an incredibly brave fight and continued to impress the doctors and nurses with her attitude and her positive outlook. She never complained and many people never knew how sick she actually was. She has been an inspiration to all of the women in her life, as she was a true warrior.

Karen was preceded in death by her mother and father, Margaret T. and Robert W. Smith. She is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Robert G. Flynn, her son William R. Flynn and his spouse, Jenny, of Utah, her daughter Kristi A. Krok and her spouse, James of Wichita, and her daughter Kelli G. Hayes and her spouse, Jeff, of Mulvane. Her grandchildren include: Christopher, Stephen, and Brianna Flynn, John and Jessica Krok, Haley Batman, and Summer Calloway, and two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Millie.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a donation in Karen’s name to Harry Hynes Hospice, 313 S Market St, Wichita, KS 67202, or the American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO 64105, United States.
