Obituary for Julia Sontag

Julia Clare Sontag, 64; mother, grandma, sister, aunt, staunch advocate for children and friend to many, died Saturday December 24th in her home.

Julie, to those who knew her, lived a life blessed with many friends and family. Every fall you’d find her melodic voice carrying the likes of Neil Young and Heart across the grove at the Winfield Valley Bluegrass festival. Whether it was her wit or her cooking, Julie’s company left an impression on many. When she entered a room, she had a way of commanding a presence as her loved ones would gather around to listen to her stories.

She raised a family with her college sweetheart, Bill. Her family will remember the many travels they all shared, from her honeymoon across the western seaboard to countless road-trips in the southwest and all points beyond the lower 48. Most of all, she will be remembered for the love she invested in her family, a daily fixture of their lives every day of hers.

She translated her giving heart and passion for others into her career in social work. Known throughout the community for her time with the Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Children Unit and her many years with the Derby Public School system. A staunch advocate for women and children’s rights and well-being, her impact extended outside of her office and beyond her retirement. Julie played an important part in the lives of many

A visitation will be held at Smith Mortuary in Derby, KS from 5 pm to 7pm on Thursday, December 29th with the family. Memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Parish in Derby, KS at 10:30 am, Friday, December 30th with a rosary reading immediately preceding at 10am.
