Frakes, Julia Ann (Taylor)
passed away August 8, 2020 at home in Douglass surrounded by family. She was born January 27, 1934 on the Allen Farm southeast of Douglass to James L. and Julia (Eckel) Taylor. In 1940 the family moved to Douglass where Ann attended school, graduating from Douglass High School in 1952. Ann was married to Darrel Frakes on June 5, 1952 at the Christian Church in Douglass.
Ann lived most of her life in Douglass with the exception of some time spent in Latham, Wichita, and Marietta, Georgia. She had gone to work at Boeing in the mid-fifties and worked there off-and-on, also working as a card-punch operator at the Fourth National Bank, Pizza Hut Corporation, Ross Industries, and Cessna. In the ‘70s she operated a restaurant, Ann’s Chicken House in Douglass. She later went back to Boeing, retiring in 1995.
In retirement Ann enjoyed going to auctions and was a collector of many things, including Fiestaware, Native American artifacts, and railroad memorabilia, an interest which had formed while watching her father’s cattle being loaded onto trains as a child. In the early ‘90s she purchased a retired Santa Fe caboose which she had shipped by rail to Douglass then moved south of town where she built a house replicating the Douglass depot.
Ann had other hobbies, as well, but her real passion throughout her life was her children, grandchildren, and later great grandchildren. “Grandma Annie” as she was known to her family and others alike, seldom missed a school or sporting event and could often be heard shouting “Stick ‘em!” at Douglass wrestling matches. She travelled throughout the country during her lifetime, usually bringing one or several grandchildren along for the adventure.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Kate Haaga, Betsy Wright, and Connie Biles; and her son Darrel D. Frakes, Jr.
She is survived by her sister Dorothy Hubbard (Butch) of Augusta, two brothers, Bill Taylor and Hope Taylor (Jana) of Douglass; three sons, J.L. Frakes of Douglass, Charles Frakes of Freeland, WA, and Richard Frakes (Kelly) of Wichita; two daughters, Liz O’Crowley and Shela Frakes, both of Douglass; 34 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held Saturday August 15th from 4-7PM at the Smith Family Mortuary in Derby, KS. A private service will be held Friday August 21, 2020 at the Douglass Christian Church.
