75, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2019. She was born November 3, 1943 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. She was a stay at home mom and barrel horse trainer. Judy worked for Raupe Sales Company along with her family. Her specialty was selling new horse trailers.
Visitation: Wednesday, September 11, 2019, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the family present from 5-7 at Smith Mortuary, Derby. Funeral Service: 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Rose Hill United Methodist Church, 19551 SW Butler Rd Rose Hill. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery, Douglass.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvie and Veda Nivens; sister Gail Ford, and brother, Laurence Nivens.
Judy is survived by her husband of 57 years, Glen Raupe; their three children, Brenda, Stacey Lankford (Bryan), Dustin (Jaime); brother, Darrell Nivens; sister Sharon Nivens; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas High School Rodeo Association Scholarship Fund, c/o Leslyn Carson, 2520 N. Taylor Ln, Stillwater, OK 74075.
Judy was born November 3, 1943 in Guthrie, Oklahoma to Harvie and Veda Nivens. She attended Pleasant Valley County School, where she rode her horse to school every day. When the small school closed she finished her education in Coyle, Oklahoma and later Oklahoma State University.
Judy loved riding horses and was, by all accounts, a skilled and accomplished rider and trainer of barrel horses. In fact, her dad once said that she set a horse so well that she looked like she was a part of the horse. Judy was a member of the Round Up Club, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, where she participated in barrel racing, pole bending, and other events every week. Her love and enthusiasm for barrel racing was seen by all who knew her. She remained a member of the International Rodeo Association, the United Rodeo Association, and numerous other barrel racing associations throughout her life. In 1960, she was crowned the Queen of the annual 89’er celebration in Guthrie, commemorating the inception of Oklahoma in 1889. That would not be the only crown Judy ever won for in that same year she also competed in the Cavalcade Queen Contest at the annual amateur rodeo and celebration held in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. In that contest she competed against around 30 other contestants in three categories, horsemanship, appearance, and speech. Judy won the competition and went on to rein as Queen in 1961.
In 1962 Judy married Glen Raupe. Judy was given a choice between a large wedding or a horse. It would come as no surprise to anyone who met her that she chose a horse! In 1962 Judy and Glen began a beautiful 57 year journey of loving marriage. Out of this union their children Brenda, Stacey, and Dustin were born. She loved her children greatly, as anybody could tell. She was happy to watch them all walk in her and Glen’s footsteps and compete in rodeos. She never missed children’s rodeos attending competitions from Fargo, North Dakota to Yakima, Washington. She was so proud of her children in everything they did. Upon leaving Oklahoma State University, Judy and her family lived in Iowa for 6 years where Glen worked in the agricultural chemical business. In 1970 the family moved to Overbrook, Kansas and later to Douglas, Kansas where she would live out the rest of her life.
