Obituary for Joseph William Brown

Joseph William Brown, 53, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022.
He was born Dec. 22, 1968, at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kans., to James and Mary Ann Brown.
Joe is survived by his parents, his sister, Jennifer Duty (Joel); nephews Jamie and Jacob Duty; and many other loving family members and friends who treasured his enduring kindness, wit and sense of humor. Joe had a gift for leaving smiles and laughter in his wake, and there are few that do not smile when they think of him.
As a child, Joe leapt headlong into competitive skating – a sport at which he excelled, thanks to his fearless nature and flexibility. He earned medals at many competitions, and especially loved the performance aspect of competing. Always something of a ham, it is difficult to find a photo of Joe from that time (or any other) without a big, cheesy smile on his face.
As an adult, Joe had a wide and varied group of friends, both personally and professionally. His gentle spirit and sense of humor made him a favorite wherever he went, and he was someone others could confide in, knowing he would keep their confidences.
As a longtime member of the accounts receivable team at Butler County Community College, Joe was a trusted colleague who always took the time to help students and their families. In many cases, he would go above and beyond to meet their needs or accommodate special requests without a second thought. His coworkers also relied on him to keep them smiling, even at the most stressful times.
From his quick way of making light of virtually any situation to his uncanny ability to pull random quotes from obscure 80s movies at just the right time, Joe brought an amazing light to the world. Yet it sometimes seemed that he failed to recognize the virtues he possessed that were so plain to everyone around him. Joe would bury any sadness by helping others, and was someone who would – and often did – do anything for someone he loved.
For Joe’s friends and family, his loss is devastating, for he played such a regular and consistent role in their lives as son, nephew, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. It seems strange to think his light has been extinguished so soon. But then, in our memory, his spirit still burns bright, and the impact he had on each of our lives will remain in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held 3 pm, Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca, Wichita, Kansas 67213.
