Obituary for Janet Sue Whittington (Pitcher)

Janet’s life began in the family home in Benton Kansas. June 20, the calendar, longest day of the year. Her mother confirmed it was the longest day of the year. Janet was the younger of two siblings, the daughters of Virgil and Helen Pitcher. The grand-daughters of Frank and Hermie Johnson of Benton and Bertha Larabie of Towanda.
Janet attended Benton schools through her Junior year. As a Senior, she attended Circle Unified High School, the consolidated districts of Benton, Towanda and smaller districts. She was in the class of ‘63’, the first class to graduate from Circle High.
Janet attended Kansas State Teachers College, (now, Emporia State University) graduating in 1968 with Library and Home Economics degrees.
Janet and John married November 1966. Following the ceremony, the couple resided in Texas and Missouri. September 1967, Janet and John relocated to Emporia where Janet completed her Senior year at KSTC. After graduation, they relocated to Wichita, where John finished his college career. The couple resided in Texas and Oregon for career opportunities returning to Wichita in 1982.
Janet was employed as an assistant at a Wichita Financial Planning Service for several years before accepting the position of Librarian for the City of Douglass. In 1968, Janet accepted the position of Middle School Librarian with the Douglass School District. Janet retired in 2008 remaining active in Civic organizations and political endeavors.
In 2016, Janet was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her condition continually deteriorated due to the cancer and the myriad of treatments until passing in June 2020 at 75 years and 7 days. The world lost a precious soul. The world’s loss is Heaven’s gain.
A private service will be held at Journey Church in Douglass. A public service will be held whenever the social situation caused by the China Virus abates to the point of allowing the ceremony.
