Obituary for Inez Laura Martin

Laura Inez Huse Martin, 94, of Mulvane, KS, passed peacefully into the presence of God on January 31, 2023. Born in Bakersfield, MO on December 9, 1928, Inez was the fourth-born of five children, and the second-born of twins. She loved growing up on the farm in southeastern Missouri and had many happy memories of her close-knit family there. Faithful Biblical instruction and a consistent, rich church life were an important part of her upbringing; she gave her life to Christ and was baptized in the river at the age of thirteen. Inez and her twin sister Lonez graduated in 1946 from Gainesville High School, Gainesville, MO, and then attended Business College together in Springfield, MO. Inez and Lonez were inseparable, marrying in a double wedding ceremony after finishing business school, then both couples moved to Wichita, KS in 1948, where Inez was employed by a laundry for several years. Both twins were divorced, and Inez married Johnie Martin, whom she always believed was the one God sent to rescue her, on October 25, 1957. She was employed by St. Frances Hospital in the Print Shop in Wichita, where she rose to the level of manager during a time when doing so was no small feat for a woman. She worked there until her retirement in 1993.

When Inez’s twin, Lonez, was divorced in 1962 Johnie and Inez opened their home to her and her two daughters, Kay and Ann. In 1965 Inez suffered the searing loss of her beloved twin, a grief she carried the rest of her life. She and Johnie became the adoptive parents of Lonez’s two children, and they formed a mutually grateful and blessed family of four.

Inez Martin’s life was characterized by a love for animals, with cats topping the list. She enjoyed and was skilled at embroidery, writing poetry, cooking, singing, teaching, and, as a wordsmith, the lost art of letter writing. Inez and Johnie loved to travel and visited Europe, Canada, Mexico, and all fifty states, often vacationing with close friends. They shared a passion for southern gospel music and attended the National Quartet Convention in KY and TN many times. Her chief delight in life was her family, and she spent many hours with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren playing games, dying Easter eggs, reading books, and making crafts, all the while quietly instilling the truths of God’s Word and His ways into each young heart.

The hallmark of Inez’s life was her faith in Jesus Christ and devotion to His Word and His Bride. She taught Sunday School for forty years, sang alto in the choir, and served as church clerk for many years. She loved church life and fellowship, developing many lifelong friendships there. She was a shining example of Christ-like love and faithfulness to her husband, her two daughters, their husbands, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her legacy will last throughout eternity by virtue of her immovable and unwavering commitment to the Lord that has influenced and impacted every member of her family and every person who knew her.

Inez was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Gertie (Hathcock) Huse, sister, Dorothy Pendergrass, brother, Robert Huse, sister, Lonez Ingram, brother, Donald Huse, and son-in-law, Eddy McPherson.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Johnie Martin, daughter, Kay McPherson, daughter, Ann (Loren) Hathaway, grandchildren, Emily Davis, Karen Game, Erin Elsken, Ellen Hathaway, Evan Hathaway, and Elizabeth Beyer, twenty-one great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Betty Huse, several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
