Obituary for Harold "Joe" Van Huss

Harold (Joe) James Van Huss, 79, of Haysville, Kansas, passed away Sunday June 25, 2023 at his home.

He was born July 2, 1943 in Norfolk, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents, of Andrew Van Huss and Cecile Van Huss (Millsap) and his sister, Carol Williams (Van Huss).

He married the love of his life, Barbara (Knowles) on March 7, 1965, in Jacksonville, Florida. Joe proudly served in the Air Force and retired after faithfully serving his country for over 28 years. Due to his military service, they were stationed all over and developed a love of traveling and seeing new sites and locations. Joe was a devoted Christian who put his faith in God and was a great bible teacher. After retiring, they settled in Abilene, Texas where he taught at a technical college, however he got the most pleasure working on his farms and raising donkeys and baby goats. He enjoyed the fresh air and turning nothing into something. They moved to Haysville, Kansas, after Bobbie retired, to be closer to family, where he spent the last 7 years of his life. Joe loved his family and enjoyed every moment he had to spend with them.

Joe is survived by his wife, Barbara “Bobbie” Van Huss (Knowles); daughters Vicki Milburn and husband Anthony Milburn of Haysville, Kansas and Deborah Bighouse of Haysville, Kansas and Angela Corvaia and husband Theodore Corvaia of Naples, Florida; 4 grandchildren, Katherine Milburn, Jaimee Broadus and husband Stephen Broadus, Hailey Bighouse, and Rebecca Milburn and husband Cole Ethington; and 5 great grandchildren, Timmy Lee, Alexa Broadus, Tanner Lee, Michael Broadus, and Tatum Lee; and many other relatives and friends.

We will celebrate Joe’s life Thursday, June 29 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Smith Family Mortuary in Derby, Kansas with Preacher Curtis Baker. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to your favorite charity. To leave his family a message, please visit his Tribute Wall at www.smithmortuary.com.
