Obituary for Gene Larcade

Gene Audry Larcade, known to many as “Buzzy”, “Smoky” and "Mean Gene" died Monday, January 2, 2023 at his home in Belle Plaine at the age of 85. Gene was born the son of Wallie Earl and Neta Rea (Dooling) Larcade on Thursday, November 4, 1937, in Wichita, Kansas.

Visitation, with family present, will be 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, January 8, 2023, and Funeral Service, 2:00 pm Monday January 9, 2023, both at Smith Mortuary, Mulvane. Interment will follow at Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Gene married Darlene Wagner and they had six children: Gene Allen, Rody, Shannon, Djuana, and the twins Kelli and Kimberli.

The early years of their marriage were spent in and around Alva, Oklahoma. While in this area he met and learned his trade and perfected his skills as a brickmason under the tutelage of Buck Knabe. The family of six were visited by the storks who dropped off Kelli and Kimi, and they became a family of eight. The family later moved to the Mulvane, Kansas area.

While living in Mulvane, they purchased 30 acres in rural Belle Plaine. Over the next several years, Gene would work his regular jobs and any spare time and weekends were spent on building their new home with the help of Darlene, the kids, and several construction friends. Around 1981-ish it was completed enough (in his opinion, not Darlene's) that he moved the family in.

Gene continued his trade as a brickmason for the next 40 odd years. If you ever had the opportunity (or some would say misfortune) to sit with him at family gatherings or ride in the truck with him, he would regale you with many bricklaying stories and name off or point out many many, maaaany of the buildings and schools that he was involved in constructing. To hear him tell it, he built half of Wichita. Okay, probably just a quarter.

Many who knew Gene "Smokey" will remember he usually had the stub of a cigar gripped between his teeth. According to him and I quote "I never lit them, I just chewed on them".

Survivors include his daughters Shannon Plummer and Djuana Roth (Darren) of Belle Plaine, Kelli Larcade and Kimi Schlick (Rodney) of Mulvane; sons, Brody Larcade of Belle Plaine and Rody Larcade of Wichita; grandchildren Jordan Larcade, Aaron Larcade, Cristina Moss, Michael Plummer, Brandon Plummer, Dalton Roth, Dylan Roth, and Zane Sclick (Kelli's son, not Kimi's, even though she tries to steal him every now and then); step-grandsons, Jared and Justin Poole; eight great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, and very recently one great-great grandchild. And many, many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Darlene Larcade; son Gene Allen Larcade; infant sisters, Josephine Larcade and Wanda Larcade; brothers, Darold Larcade and Robert "Sonny" Larcade; sisters Reta Larcade Tracy, Delores "Darlene" Larcade Haskin Newman Garoutte; and Mary Ann Larcade Garoutte; parents, Wallie Larcade and Neta (Dooling) Larcade.
