Obituary for Gary Mead

Gary Lee Mead, son of the late Elmo Mead and Winifred (Hemmert) Mead was born January 30, 1939 in Ransom Kansas.
He died peacefully on November 3, 2022 at the age of 83 in the Derby Rock Hospital in Derby Kansas. He was a devote Christian and devoted fun loving family man. He loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest, he was always lending a helpful hand whenever and wherever he could.
Gary graduated from Great Bend High School in Great Bend Kansas in 1957.
The summer of 1957 he met the love of his life Elaine Demmitt of Meade Kansas, they married on February 13 1960. Born of this union was 3 children Garvin, Lance and Kristi.
Gary was a hardworking man. He worked in the oil fields as a derrick hand as a driller. From there he became a district manager in circulation for the Daily Oklahoman newspaper before coming back to Kansas to work in the same job for The Wichita Eagle for 16 years. In 1981 he returned to Meade Kansas to go into farming. There he became interested in horseracing through his father in law and he eventually raised Rare Bar which became the 1995 World Champion Quarter Race Horse of the Year winning the prestigious AQHA Challenge Race in San Antonio Texas. He also loved to golf, even got a hole in one during a golf tournament. He bowled on the ABC National Bowling Tournament first place team in 1992. Gary loved playing bridge, especially duplicate at the Bridge Center.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Lonnie Mead, sisters Velda Osborne and Judy Johnson, and 2 infant granddaughters Sadie and Tempe.
He is survived by his wife Elaine of 62 years, son Garvin Mead of Rose Hill Kansas, son Lance (Heidi) Mead of Peck Kansas, and daughter Kristi (Theo) Bratton of Lawrence Kansas; grandsons Blake, Darry, Dalin, Shelton and Anton; great granddaughter Bella and great grandson Ryker; brothers, Dean (Linda) Mead of Kansas City, MO, Darwyn (Pat) Mead of McPherson, KS; sister, Connie Wallis of Searcy, AR; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Andover Kansas on Monday November 7th at 2:00.
