Obituary for Gary Alley

Gary Glen Alley – March 30, 1939 – March 24, 2023

On Friday, March 24, 2023, God called home the little boy He loaned to William Arthur and Katherine Rebecca Alley of rural Rose Hill, Kansas. Gary Glen Alley, born on March 30, 1939, lived the first sixteen years of his life as a farm boy. He grew into a valuable farm hand milking cows and tending to myriad tasks a farm requires. He attended Rose Hill Grade and High Schools for ten years, where he excelled as a natural athlete whether at baseball, basketball, or track. Free time found him fishing at a nearby creek, playing at the swimming hole, hunting rabbits, and his favorite-batting rocks while standing in the middle of the gravel road. Typical of country life, he was a member of 4-H and FFA, becoming president of the latter even though he never sought attention or honors.

The family left the farm in 1955 to move to nearby Derby, Kansas, where Gary spent his last two years of high school again excelling in the same sports but adding football to the list, even though he had never played before. Graduating from Derby High School in 1957 and never having left the state of Kansas, he headed to California and other western states to work various jobs and explore what our country has to offer besides cows and farm land. After a few years satisfying the wanderlust, he returned home and took up a new sport, bowling, again becoming a natural and received several trophies from various tournaments. He worked at the Rose Bowl East to help others learn the sport.

After retiring, he spent several years in devoted care of his mother who lived to one hundred years old. Never seeking the spotlight, always self-effacing, he took the path less traveled and was greeted at the end by his Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Katherine Alley, his sister and brother-in-law Wilma and Bill Austin, his brother Mark Alley (Virginia); and his sister-in-law Ramona Winters Alley. He is survived by his brothers Bill Alley, Marion Alley (Kay), and Donald Alley (Carolyn), and by sisters Shirley Walters (Jack), Elaine Kohner (Jeff), and Sondra Drake (Vernon), and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Tuesday, March 28th, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Smith Family Mortuary 1415 North Rock Road Derby, Kansas 67037.

Memorial contributions may be made to Union Rescue Mission, 2800 N Hillside St, Wichita, KS 67219.
