Obituary for David Alan Chapman

David (Dave) Alan Chapman, 75, of Rock, KS passed away January 20 th at Derby Health and Rehabilitation Hospital. He was born April 3 rd , 1945 to Charles and Pauline (Spangler) Chapman in Pittsburg, KS. He graduated from St. Mary’s-Colgan High School in 1963. He enlisted in the Army National Guard later that year. He went on to attend Pittsburg State University where he met his wife and love of his life, Linda Chapman, getting married in 1966. Dave later commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 1968 and completed his degree in Biology at Pittsburg State in 1971. Dave received many awards and commendations over his 33 years of service, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Army Reserve in 1996. Dave enjoyed volunteer work and gave a considerable amount of his time to Boy Scouts over the years as an assistant Scout Master and Council Commissioner of Quivira Council. He worked as a civil servant for both the state and federal governments for the majority of his career. He retired from the 89 th Reserve Readiness Command in 2008 as the Chief of Automation and Telecommunications. Dave enjoyed traveling and the outdoors and spent his retired years on his ranch enjoying the company of his children and grandchildren and traveling the world with his wife. Dave is survived by his wife Linda Chapman of Rock, KS; his three sons, Chris Chapman (Marni) of Derby, KS; Matt Chapman (Amber) of Moore, OK; and Josh Chapman (Michelle) of Kansas City, MO and his daughter, Melissa Allen (Jason) of Park City, KS. And his five Grandchildren Alexis Allen, Brooke Allen, Mclaren Chapman, Carly Allen, and Grady Chapman. He is also survived by his brothers Mike (Rosemary), Jim (Sherry), and Jerry (Peggy) Chapman of Pittsburg, KS and his numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cheryl, his brother, Stephen, and his parents. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association. Visitation will be held on Sunday Jan. 24 from 2 tp 4 pm at Smith Family Mortuaries, Funeral service will be held on Monday Jan. 25, at 10:00 am at Smith Family Mortuary in Derby.
