Obituary for Christy Bailey (Bailey)

It is with deep sorrow that we announce Christine Bailey, 52, of Derby, KS, and Washington DC passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 27, 2022. Christy was born on November 23rd, 1969, to Gary and (Mary) Joyce Bailey in Wichita, KS. She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She was also brilliant in mind and spirit, and known for her kindness and sweet smile. Christy is preceded in death by her grandparents, many aunts and uncles, and her infant niece Cassie. Christy is survived by her parents, Gary and Joyce Bailey, siblings Todd (Daina) Bailey, Susan (Mitch) Adams, and Angela (Scott) Tomlinson. She was an amazing aunt to Bryce and Bridget Adams, Leah and Cassie Tomlinson, and Cooper and Brody Bailey. Though she had no children of her own, her love for these children was as deep as a mother’s, and they loved her just as much. Christy spent more than 20 years as a valued and trusted member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters family, rising to Director of Political & Legislative Action and Special Assistant to General President James P. Hoffa. Christy played an instrumental role in historic political and legislative victories for working families, electing labor allies to local, state and federal office and passing laws that ensured a good quality of life for workers. Her steadfast leadership in confronting the pension crisis that faced millions of workers, ultimately led to the passage of the historic Butch Lewis Act. As a trusted advisor and top leader in the U.S. Labor Movement, she was an unparalleled figure in a profession traditionally dominated by men. Often working behind the scenes, Christy never sought credit for her outstanding work, but her contributions to improve workers’ lives will be felt for generations to come. Christy spent many years in DC, but returned to Kansas two years ago to be with family. We are grateful to have had that time with her as it was full and rich with love. Her unexpected death reminds us to hold our loved ones close. May we all remember her infectious laugh, love for her dog Sammy, and generosity as we live life to the fullest in her memory. A memorial service will be held at 2:00, Friday, June 3, 2022 at Countryside Christian Church, 1919 S. Rock Road, Wichita, KS 67207. Memorial donations in Christy’s name may be made to the World Central Kitchen at https://donate.wck.org.
