Obituary for Charlene Mills

Charlene Mills, 90, passed away Monday, December 2, 2019. She was born June 8, 1929 to Samuel and Lenora (Falcon) Covarrubias in Rockport, TX. Charlene married Thomas O. Mills from Mulvane, KS on April 9, 1955 in Tacoma, WA. They later moved to Auburn where their first child James was born. From there they moved to Dallas, Oregon where they had their second child Pamela. In 1960 they moved to Wichita to be closer to Tom’s parents. They moved to Douglass in 1968 and settled into their final home in 1972. Her husband Tom passed in 1999.

Charlene owned and operated Mills Bookkeeping Service for 26 years. She was the Treasurer for the City of Douglass for 24 years. She enjoyed being involved in volunteer work and participated in several committees in her community including; President of the Douglass Chamber of Commerce, Douglass Public Library, Vice-President of the Senior Center and the City Zoning Board.

Charlene was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; daughter, Pam; parents; and long time companion, Delmar Shenold. She is survived by her son, James Mills; 5 grandchildren, Christy, Gloria , Bea, Stephanie, and Jamie; great-grandchildren, Ethan Avery, Caleb Avery, Jaden Avery, Isaac Avery, Emily Avery, Sander Mills, Elizabeth Russell, Evian Russell, Elora Russell, Noah Nelson, and Ben Nelson.

Visitation: Friday, December 6, 2019 from 4:30 to 6 pm at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby, KS 67037. Funeral: 1 pm, Saturday, December 7, 2019 at First Christian Church of Douglass, 303 E. 4th St., Douglass, KS 67039. Interment to follow at Douglass Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Douglass Senior Center, 124 W. 4th St., Douglass, KS 67039.
