Obituary for Carolyn Sue Moncivais

Heaven gained a wonderful woman and loving mother on October 2nd, 2022, when Carolyn Sue Moncivais went to be with our Lord peacefully at the age of 81. Carolyn was born April 16, 1941 in Houston, Texas to Walter and Natalie (Neel) Schmidt. She graduated Clear Creek High School and began her studies at Friends Bible College in Haviland, KS, which she often reflected as some of the best of times. She continued her education graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Sociology from Emporia State University, then finishing her education graduating with a master’s degree in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake in 1971.

She began her career as a social worker for the Texas’ Department of Mental Health at a state hospital in San Antonio, where she met her future husband Tomas Moncivais Sr. They married in 1966 and in the following years Carolyn would soon become a mother to three raucous boys, who would test her patience and loving ways daily. Following the loss of her husband years later, she moved to Park City, KS where she served as a school social worker with the Wichita Public School District. Throughout the next 32 years, she provided her expertise at multiple schools, as well as also working part-time with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America; a nonprofit program helping youth find positive role-models and mentors. Carolyn attended Friends Northridge Church regularly where she loved to sing in the choir and supported numerous church functions.

She loved watching her children and grandchildren’s activities and accomplishments, often documenting them through scrapbooks and journaling. She was a wonderful, nurturing mother whose smile would radiate the room with kindness. Carolyn was a single mother who devoted her life to raising her three boys and having a strong relationship with God. She enjoyed being a social worker who helped those families in need for over 40 years in both Texas and Kansas. Carolyn loved all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; even adopting the friends of her boys as her own while cooking for them all, even at midnight if their need arose – her love language was through her wonderful cooking.

She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Natalie Schmidt, her husband, Tomas S. Moncivais Sr, and her son Tomas S. Moncivais Jr. (Sheila Vasquez). Carolyn is survived by her sons Walter (Stephanie) Moncivais, Jesse (Shyreese) Moncivais, Grandchildren, Christian (Kelsey) Moncivais, Lakota (Bryce) Hyde, Brianna Williams, Aja (Travis) Von Elling, Ambra (David) Colborn, Braydon Moncivais, Summer Moncivais, Natalie Moncivais, Asa Moncivais, Gabriel Moncivais, Tapley Moncivais, 14 great-grandchildren; and by brothers, Walter (Marie) Schmidt and John (Karen) Schmidt.
