Obituary for Carolyn Gibson Hathaway

Carolyn Celestine Gibson Hathaway passed away serenely at her home in the presence of God and her husband, Friday, May 13, 2022 at 2:22p.m. She was 68 years old at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband Joseph Hathaway, Derby, Kansas, her daughter, Keisha Hathaway, Dallas, Texas, her son, Ojore Hathaway, daughter in-law, Kimley Hathaway, grand-daughter, Zoey Hathaway, Mesquite, Texas, her sister Freda Brinson of Chesapeake, Virginia, brothers Curtis Gibson, Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Alvin Gibson, Dover, Delaware, sister in laws, Brenda Gibson and Margarete Gibson, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Carolyn was born and raised in the coastal city of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and is the youngest child of the late Curtis and Dorothy Gibson.
Carolyn is an alumni of Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, NC, and Webster University, Saint Louis, Missouri. She shared her knowledge and spent her professional career building relationships, and successfully impacting the lives of people in multiple professions. In 1975 she started her career as an elementary teacher for our U.S. Air Force dependent schools at Spangdahlem Air Force Base (AFB), Germany and Minot AFB, Minot, North Dakota. When her husband was assigned to Little Rock AFB, Little Rock, Arkansas in 1982, she served as a fashion instructor at South Central Community College. Carolyn decided to change from early childhood education to higher education as an Instructor, and Counselor with Butler County Community College. Finally, Carolyn transitioned to impacting the lives of our U.S. service members as they transitioned from military, to civilian life as a Transition Human Resource Advisor. Carolyn worked tirelessly, and proudly made sure our U.S. service members had skills necessary to pursue a meaningful and rewarding living for themselves, and their family. Carolyn retired from Civil Service in 2011, after receiving over thirteen professional certifications, and accolades from the Department of Defense during her tenure as a Civil Servant. In retirement Carolyn lead the Women’s Ministry for St. Mark United Methodist Church where she built long lasting friendships.
Home-Going services will be held Tuesday, May 24th, 11:00am, at Saint Mark United Methodist Church, 1525 North Lorraine, Wichita, KS.
