Jay Dee Shrum

Jay Dee Shrum, of Derby, age 75, went to be with the Lord, Monday, June 24, 2013. Visitation 1-8 PM Saturday, 1-8 PM Sunday, with family receiving friends 4-6 PM on Sunday, at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby. Funeral service 10 AM Monday, July 1, Cornerstone Christian Church, 5531 E. 37th St. N., Wichita. Graveside service 3 PM Monday, New Mount Hope Cemetery, Galesburg, KS. Jay was born March 8, 1938 in Galesburg, KS, to Lewis & Bernice Shrum. He worked with his dad in the family owned grocery store/meat-locker plant. After graduating from High School, he worked at Boeing and attended Wichita Technical Institute. Jay married his high school sweetheart, Sonya M. Rucker, June 29, 1958 at Thayer, KS. He pursued a career in the auto business and became partner/owner of Robinson-Lesline Buick from 1974 to 1983, later becoming the owner of Mid Continent Lease and Rental Car Sales to the present with another car expert, his son Jay Jr. Jay is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marcie, his parents, brothers, Kenneth and Ernie and his sister, Lois Bowman. Survivors include his devoted wife of 55 years, Sonya; son, Jay Lewis Shrum (Marni); granddaughters, Amanda Jaye Messenger (Jon), Ashlee Jae Thompson (Joey), Amber Jay Shrum (fiancé Resean); great-grandchildren, Landon and Emelyn Thompson, Brylee and Daric Messenger; brothers, Everett (Lois), Keith (Bonna); sister, Leita Beard; and his brother-in-law, Bill Bowman. The Shrum family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Dean Youngberg and Dr. David Johnson for the years of care given to Jay.
